1941 model 741-B Indian Military Motorcycle
This gallery contains 11 photos.
This vintage restored motorcycle was on display at the 2012 “Americans in Wartime Museum” open house event at the ‘Tank Farm’ near Nokesville, Virginia. This machine is a 1941 model 741-B Indian, according to the owner, Herb Gill.
2013 Americans in Wartime Museum Open House
It is that time again! August 17th & 18th are the dates for this years “Tank Farm” Open House. If you have any interest in armored vehicles or just history in general, the vehicle displays and demonstrations at the Nokesville, VA “Tank Farm” provides a fascinating look at the actual hardware of modern ground warfare. Last year’s event was extremely colorful and this year should be no different. As usual, registration (aka ‘RSVP’) is requested (click HERE), though this year the event organizers are asking for a recommended $10 donation from each adult. This is noted as a “voluntary” donation but regardless, it goes to a good cause and is little to ask in support of such a spectacular event.
As with past ‘road trips’, carpooling is encouraged as a way to reduce the number of cars filling the parking area and to share the gas bill. Hope to see you there!

July meeting minutes
President Nerino began meeting at 7pm. Eighteen members in attendance plus one visitor, Chris Krieg. Side note: Bill Wesley brought in six kits he has purchased for the future raffle. A mix of aircraft and armor was on display for all to look over.
Old Business:
Discussion continued about the proposed model display at an upcoming NAS Oceana social event. This is to be a display of planes that have flown from of this naval air station during its 70 years of operation. Mike Nerino solicited the membership about what they might have on their shelves that would be appropriate for this display. Mention was also made of the officer’s meeting concerning this display and about the possibility of the club purchasing a display case for such opportunities in the future. For this event, the base coordinator will provide a display case, if we can come up with models to go into it. Chapter Contact Robert Beach reiterated that we need the models to pull this off and, so far, he hasn’t gotten much response to his earlier emails. He asked that members who could provide models for this effort to please contact him by July 26 so he can determine whether we have enough models for this display. If we do have enough models, the only thing we’ll need do as a club is to have someone deliver the models to the base and place them on the display tables. This is meant to be a decoration, nothing more, so no presentation skills will be required of the person(s) dropping off the models. Just deliver and then return to pick up. Beach says we should have a minimum of a dozen models for this. August 2 is the deadline. Mike Nerino, Brian Nerino and Mike Schine also have models ready to go. Brian has 11 models ready. Contact Robert Beach directly to let him know if you are interested in putting your models on display.
Ed’s Hobby shop update. We have a new hobby shop in Virginia Beach and the owner sent an invitation for our club to venture down there for a meet-and-greet. After discussion, Beach will tell him to plan on having us there Saturday, July 27 for pizza and chat. A show of hands showed that seven members were planning to attend.
New Business:
Jerry Quick of TAMS asks that HRSM to sponsor a $25 trophy pack for the upcoming TAMS show. Motion made, approved and check issued. Raffle ticket pricing was set at $1/ticket by a vote of the membership present. (Remember, we won’t have the raffle till we sell at least $100 in tickets.) No other new business. Mike Nerino conducted a demo on making aircraft seat belts and pushrod details for radial engines after the show-and-tell portion of the meeting. Meeting adjourned.

January 18, 2013 Club Meeting
Meeting Minutes:
Club officer elections were held based on the previously nominated ballot with allowance for any last minute nominees. Gordan Geiger had sent notice that he had to withdraw due to work commitments with his business and his concern that he wouldn’t be able to provide appropriate attention to the club duties. End result of voting was:
- Pres: Mike Nerino
- VP: Ken Patrick
- Sec: Dennis Tennant
- Treasurer: Gary Telecsan
- Chapter Contact: Robert Beach
A Club Muster was conducted by the outgoing secretary Ed Rose reading off the club roster, with 19 members in attendance. The next year’s Club Calendar was presented to the club for validation with several upcoming show events being noted for addition with not change to the required club events. General discussion regarding possible demo topics came up with the following items thought to be of interest:
- Airbrush techniques (general spraying, camo, tight patterns, paint mixing, airbrush care and feeding, etc.)
- Scribing techniques
- Model Photography techniques
- Soldering techniques for Photo Etch parts
- Weathering techniques (washes, dry-brushing, pin-washes, chipping, pastels, splattering mud, smoke stains, “light” variance techniques, salt-masking, biological weathering aka ‘hulls’.)
- Masking (tapes, liquids, adherents (aka ‘salt’, ‘toothpaste splattering’…), dry transfers, commercial vinyl masks, striping, crayon blocks, paper, etc.)
- NMF [natural metal finishes] such as laquers, foils paint and commercial ‘chrome plating’ services
- “Tool Box Dump” session (Sharing the tools found in our toolboxes…good way to share tips and tricks picked up over time.)
Another point discussed was how to improve the room lighting for the Demos and ShowNTell. Recommended portable lighting fixtures for the demos and possible use of supplemental LED ‘string’ lighting using the ‘banner’ eyelets on the roof beams were cited. The meeting finished with a bit of ShowNTell with the ‘three Bills’ contributing examples of their latest (that is, Bill Lee, Bill Wesley & Bill Brickhouse.) Mike and Brian Nerino also displayed three models each while Jim Hassler showed three very nice examples of natural metal finished airplane models done using foiling techniques.

IPMS Region 2 News/ General Tidbits & Club information:
Club Dues are, ah, due! Annual club dues are to be paid at the February meeting. Dues cover the cost of the meeting hall and provide funds to support other club initiatives such as the annual swap meet and trophy sponsorships for local & regional shows and of course the IPMS/USA Chapter Charter renewal. Please pay the club treasurer your $20 dues no later than the February meeting.
Club Officer Nominations – Club elections are to be held at the January meeting. The club ballot – as it currently stands from nominations made at the December meeting – is as follows:
- President: Mike Nerino (incumbent)
- Vice President: Ken Patrick, Gordon Geiger, Brian Nerino
- Secretary: John Allen, Ken Patrick, Robert Beach, Dennis Tennant
- Treasurer: Gary Telecsan (incumbent)
- Chapter Contact: Robert Beach (incumbent)
It cannot be stressed enough that holding a club office is a responsibility for every club member. The work is not difficult but it IS necessary to ensure the club continues to exist. Without anyone taking up the (admittedly light) burdens of keeping the organization running, then it will simply stop. Unless the membership desires to disband, we all must “take a turn at bat”. The ballot is not closed until the election actually begin, so a last call for nominations will be made.
Latest 2014 National Convention Updates:
The third NATSCON Committee meeting was held on 11 January at the VA Air & Space Museum. The agenda included several items that were proposed at the last meeting for further resolution Hopefully at least one member was in attendance to provide some meeting details. Again, the meetings are essentially ‘open’ in spite of being organized for subcommittee chairs’ disussions. It is worthwhile to attend if possible just to see how a National comes about. Who knows, perhaps HRSM will be the next to bid to host the convention. There is much work yet to be done so if anyone is interested in helping, please communicate immediately with Chairman John Lent at ‘uaaufans@verizon.net’ or phone 238-9976.
December 21, 2012 Club Meeting
Meeting Minutes:
The annual Holiday Dinner Meeting was called to order in the church Community Hall with 23 members and many ‘long suffering’ family members in attendance . The tables were loaded with an wonderful array of dishes that demonstrated the blessings of the season and, to no small degree, the club’s cooking skills. Also groaning under the ‘blessings’ were the Raffle tables, organized by Bill Wesley and further assisted by donations from the membership. Before the festivities began, the call for new club officer nominations was completed. After a moment of contemplation and thanks, led by Joe Koenig, dinner was “served”. Conversation was plentiful while everyone filed past the memorial candle and wreath for Mike Eberhardt and took another chance to ogle the raffle stock. Plenty of food and fellowship was enjoyed and the extended raffle made for some lively banter. All in all, the event appeared to be a success and a fine close to the year.
