Update as of 6 March, 2013:

Don Nickolson from CVSM club has provided the show documentation including the show flyer and registration forms.  Please use these as needed:

There has been no apparent update at the club website, so use this documentation as the most current information.

For all you ‘show hounds’, Jim Malcolm at IPMS/CVSM sent this ‘heads-up’ notice and I thought it needed a full post.  They don’t yet have their show webpage “up”, but Jim said it will be shortly on their club website at: ‘http://catawbavalleyscalemodelers.com/‘ The location can be found through Google and the driving time is roughly 6 hours, so this would most likely be an over-nighter for anyone from our area (this is figured starting from the HRBT, your mileage may vary -literally!)

Greetings fellow modelers,  the Catawba Valley Scale Modelers will be holding their second annual model contest and swap meet on Saturday, March 16, 2013.

After our first Annual Contest and Swap meet, we have decided to change a couple of things in the format to make our Second Annual Contest and Swap meet flow better. We will hold this contest at our home location in Hickory, NC.  The contest will be held at the Hickory Regional Airport, which is located on U. S. 321, and just a few miles north of I-40. The contest will be held in the terminal building of the airport. The vendor area will be in another building about fifty yards across the parking lot from the terminal. There is ample free parking, and you will be able to unload and later load models from your vehicles at the front door. There is a small restaurant at the terminal, and many others nearby. We will provide maps listing most area restaurants and local hobby shops.

Located in the same terminal building, is the Hickory Aviation Museum. Admission is free for all participants of the contest. The museum has been in existence for five years, and has some very interesting displays. Some inside exhibits include a cutaway working jet engine, a cutaway working radial engine, two 20mm Vulcan rotary cannons from F-14 and F/A-18 aircraft, ejection seats, and much more. The outside aircraft exhibits include the last Navy F-14D Tomcat that ever flew, Vietnam combat veteran A¬7A Corsair II, the seventh F-105B Thunderchief built, the 86th F-4B Phantom II built (originally an F4H), FJ¬3M Fury, T¬33 Shooting Star, F-5E Tiger II Marine Aggressor, A¬4L Skyhawk, De Havilland Vampire, HA-200 Saeta (ME-200), T-34C Mentor, and a Fedex Fokker F-27 Friendship that has an open cockpit that you can sit in. Also, the only F-14 cockpit section, other that at the Naval Aviation Museum, will be parked in front of the contest area, and will be open to get into. This is a great photo opportunity. Also on display are Phoenix missiles, Sidewinder missile, Maverick missile, and several bombs and rocket pods. Extra tour guides will be on hand for questions, or you can just spend all the time you want looking around.

A special guest will be at the contest. You may be familiar with the Martin B-26 Marauder from WWII nicknamed “FLAK BAIT”. Several model companies include decals for this aircraft in their kits. An aircraft that flew more missions during WWII than any other U.S. Aircraft (202) and is on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC . One of the last pilots that flew “FLAK BAIT”, Sherman Best, will be on hand during the contest for you to meet and to sign autographs. (I took my Monogram 1:48 scale model of “FLAK BAIT”, and he autographed the bottom of one of the wings.)

Also planned for the contest is a very special event. Everyone who enters a model in the contest will have their name put into a hat. At 1pm, we will draw three (3) names from the hat and each will get a twenty (20) minute ride in a Cessna O-1F “Birddog” warbird (also known as the L-19). This aircraft is painted in a Vietnam era US Air Force scheme.  The flights depend on two things:  first would be suitable weather and second would be availability of the pilot. [Look for updates on the contest website.]

Several individuals at our last contest told us what a good time they had. We are going to do everything we can to see that everyone really enjoys this one. Please let all your members know so they can plan to attend. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.  Hope to see you there!

  1. Dwight Robbins says:

Where will the photos of the show be posted and when?

    • RBeach says:

Dwight, I’m not sure we will have any pix to show here – given the distance, most of our members at the last club meeting indicated they’d not be able to attend. We provided a ‘write-up’ of the contest here on the website to help support our fellow Chapter primarily because their own website was having issues. Since our website is regularly linked by Google, searches for the Catawba show should be visible, which helps channel folks to the info they need.
Thanks for visiting! Regards – Robert
